Final Night for I-35 Northeast Frontage-Road Closures: Ramps and Frontage Roads Close 11 P.M. to 7 A.M. on the Northeast Side
TxDOT's overnight frontage-road and ramp closures along I-35 on the Northeast Side run their final scheduled night Thursday, with extended hours from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. and signed detours at Rittiman, Fratt and Walzem.
Drivers crossing the Northeast Side overnight should plan around Interstate 35 one more night. Frontage roads and exit ramps along I-35 close overnight through Oct. 30 as part of the I-35 Northeast Expansion Program, weather permitting, according to the Texas Department of Transportation — with extended hours from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. in the Oct. 26–30 window, so Thursday night into Friday morning is the final scheduled night in this round.
The detours are specific. Northbound near Space Center Drive, drivers are directed onto Industry Park Drive and back to the frontage road at the next entrance ramp. Northbound near Rittiman Road and Exit 164B, the detour runs along Rittiman, Fratt and Eisenhauer roads. Southbound near Fratt Road and Exit 165, drivers follow Fratt Road, Interchange Parkway and Walzem Road; southbound near Walzem Road and Exit 164B, detours run along Walzem, Austin Highway and Eisenhauer, with some traffic redirected to the Northeast Loop 410 interchange. Southbound between Eisenhower Lane and Petroleum Drive, traffic detours via the I-410 connector, Binz Engleman Road and the northbound frontage road.
Two things stay open. TxDOT said the I-35 main lanes and George Beach Avenue remain open during the closures, and access to Brooke Army Medical Center is maintained — at George Beach, drivers can continue onto the southbound frontage road, reach the medical center or turn toward Petroleum Drive, and the frontage road between George Beach and Petroleum temporarily carries two-way traffic with law enforcement directing vehicles at the intersection.
The desk's advice is the agency's: follow the posted detour signs and allow extra time for overnight travel. Daytime drivers are not affected by this schedule — the closures are overnight only.
