Final Night for the I-35 Frontage Road Closures on the Northeast Side: Friday's Detour Guide (T.W.A. NEWS)

Friday night is the last night of the Texas Department of Transportation's overnight frontage road and exit ramp closures along Interstate 35 on the Northeast Side, according to KTSA's report of the TxDOT announcement, read in full this cycle. The closures, part of the I-35 Northeast Expansion Program and weather permitting, have run with extended hours of 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. from October 26 through October 30, and they end with tonight's window.

The detour map for the final night: northbound near Space Center Drive, drivers are directed onto Industry Park Drive and back to the frontage road at the next entrance ramp; northbound near Rittiman Road and Exit 164B, detours run along Rittiman, Fratt and Eisenhauer roads. Southbound near Fratt Road and Exit 165, drivers follow Fratt Road, Interchange Parkway and Walzem Road; southbound near Walzem Road and Exit 164B, detours use Walzem, Austin Highway and Eisenhauer, with some drivers redirected to the Northeast Loop 410 interchange; and southbound between Eisenhower Lane and Petroleum Drive, traffic detours via the I-410 connector, Binz Engleman Road and the northbound frontage road.

Two things stay open through it all, TxDOT said: the I-35 main lanes and George Beach Avenue. Access to Brooke Army Medical Center is maintained — at George Beach Avenue, drivers can continue onto the southbound frontage road, reach the medical center or turn toward Petroleum Drive — and the frontage road between George Beach Avenue and Petroleum Drive temporarily carries two-way traffic, with law enforcement directing vehicles at the intersection. Drivers are encouraged to follow posted detour signs and allow extra time for overnight travel.
