Sen. Chris Murphy Hospitalized After a Stroke at His Son's Hockey Game; His Office Says He Is Awake, Alert and Expected to Recover Fully
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, 53, suffered a stroke Saturday afternoon after his arm went numb at his son's hockey game, his chief of staff said Sunday — he was transferred to Johns Hopkins, is responding well to treatment, and his doctors are encouraged, with a full recovery expected.

Sen. Chris Murphy, the Connecticut Democrat, has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, his office announced Sunday. Murphy, 53, began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending his son's hockey game, his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said in a statement carried by USA Today, CNN and NPR's member stations. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors discovered he had experienced a stroke, and was transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for further monitoring.
"He is responding well to treatment," Herwitt said. "The doctors are encouraged by his progress. He is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery." Murphy's office has not released further detail on the stroke's severity or how long he is expected to remain hospitalized, per the accounts read this cycle. Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, who suffered a stroke during his 2022 campaign, said he hoped Murphy would enjoy "a full and speedy recovery," per CNN's account.
Murphy has served in the Senate since 2013, after representing Connecticut's 5th District in the House, and sits on the Appropriations Committee; USA Today's account describes him as a rising Democratic figure, a leading voice on immigration and on bipartisan firearm-safety legislation dating to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, and a prolific campaign surrogate through this midterm cycle who has been mentioned as a potential 2028 presidential contender. He is not on the ballot in Tuesday's midterm elections. The announcement landed Sunday afternoon, two days before an election that will decide control of the chamber where he serves.
