Texas A&M University-San Antonio celebrated the grand opening of its Public Health and Education Building this week, a $55 million facility on the South Side that the university says will expand health education, research and workforce training across South Texas.

The 35,000-square-foot building includes classrooms, research laboratories and administrative spaces. It houses the College of Education and Human Development, the Community Health Program and the Genetics and Genomics Group, which studies genetic and environmental factors contributing to rare and complex disorders.

The building also deepens a partnership, launched in 2022 and formally solidified earlier this year, among A&M-San Antonio, the Texas A&M University Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine and University Health. University Health recently opened the Vida clinic next to campus and will open the neighboring Palo Alto Hospital in 2027, and College of Medicine students and faculty will have classroom and office space in the new building.

Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar said at the opening, "This building is where a lot of the people who will care for this community will get their education, including future teachers, public health professionals, and researchers working on the health problems that hit families here the hardest." The university says a new bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences will launch in Fall 2027, providing a pathway for students interested in medicine, biomedical research and other health professions.
