San Marcos has a World Series champion. Former University of Texas infielder David Hamilton drove in a run in Game 5 on Wednesday night as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in St. Petersburg to win the first World Series title in franchise history, according to the University of Texas athletics report and the game's play-by-play. Hamilton's fifth-inning single scored Cooper Pratt to make it 2-0, before William Contreras' RBI double and Pratt's sacrifice fly completed the scoring.

Hamilton's October rewrote a Texas record book that had stood for 86 years. He is the 12th former Longhorn to win a World Series, only the second Texas player to homer in one — joining Pinky Higgins in 1940 — and his four RBI in the Fall Classic are the second-most by a Longhorn, trailing only Higgins' six, UT reported. Across Milwaukee's 13 playoff games he hit .333 with two home runs, six RBI, seven runs scored, three stolen bases and a .950 OPS, and he is the first Longhorn to hit multiple home runs in the same postseason. The run came in his fourth big-league season and his first back with Milwaukee, which acquired him in a trade on Feb. 9 after three years with the Boston Red Sox — the same club that had drafted him in the eighth round in 2019 was Milwaukee itself.

Before Austin, there was San Marcos. Hamilton started all four years at shortstop for the Rattlers and quarterbacked the football team as a junior and senior, and head baseball coach Bryan Webb told FOX 7 Austin he knew early: he first saw Hamilton hitting with his dad at age 12 and said the freshman was "phenomenal" within ten minutes of his first workout, moving from third base to the outfield to shortstop, where he stayed. "You don't get to coach athletes like him very often," Webb said. San Marcos cheered him through the Series — and now gets to cheer a champion.
