Hakeem Jeffries Stumps for Johnny Garcia at an East Side Church and Takes Aim at Trump's Bible Knowledge
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared at Calvary Baptist Church on Sunday to back Johnny Garcia in the redrawn 35th Congressional District, telling the congregation that Democrats have built the largest voter protection effort in midterm history.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared in San Antonio on Sunday, stumping for congressional candidate Johnny Garcia at Calvary Baptist Church on the East Side and accusing President Donald Trump of courting religious voters without knowing the faith's basic conventions, the San Antonio Current reported. "In Second Corinthians, the fourth chapter. Now, that's Second Corinthians, not 'Two Corinthians,'" Jeffries told parishioners. "Mr. President, if you sell the Bible, you should know the Bible."
Jeffries, who is in line to become House speaker if Democrats win the midterms, was backing Garcia in a tight race against Republican Carlos De La Cruz for Texas' 35th Congressional District — a majority-Hispanic district redrawn by the Republican-led Legislature last year that backed Trump by nearly 10 points in 2024, according to the Current. Garcia, a former Bexar County sheriff's deputy, told the congregation he believes the nation "can get back to having safe streets and still protect our constitutional rights."
After the service, Jeffries told the Current that Democrats intend to protect the vote in Texas and nationally. "We're going to make sure that it's a free and fair election here in Texas and across the country," he said. "Democrats have stood up the largest voter protection effort in the history of a midterm election in America." Early voting in Bexar County runs through Oct. 30, with Election Day on Nov. 3.
