Moved Counties This Year? Friday Is the Last Day to Vote a Limited Ballot in Texas — It Will Not Be There on Election Day

Moved Counties This Year? Friday Is the Last Day to Vote a Limited Ballot in Texas — It Will Not Be There on Election Day (T.W.A. NEWS)

Friday, October 30 is the final day of early voting in Texas — and for one group of voters it is a harder deadline than for everyone else. Texans who moved from one Texas county to another and whose registration is not yet effective in the new county may qualify to vote a limited ballot in person, but that process ends when early voting ends, according to The Texas Public Record's explainer on the deadline, read in full this cycle, which cites Texas Secretary of State Election Advisory No. 2026-24 and Chapter 112 of the Texas Election Code. Limited ballots are not available at Election Day polling places.

A limited ballot is narrower than a regular one: it covers only elections in which the voter is eligible in both the former and the current county — statewide races are the clearest example — and generally not county or precinct offices in either place. Eligibility turns on the voter's registration and residency circumstances, and the explainer stresses that a move within the same county is a different situation, and that a provisional ballot is not a substitute for the limited-ballot procedure.

The in-person limited ballot must be cast at the main early-voting polling place in the voter's new county — not at any neighborhood early-voting site — so a qualifying voter should call the new county's early-voting clerk first to confirm eligibility, the location, and its hours before making the trip. The Secretary of State's Elections Division can be reached at 1-800-252-VOTE (8683) for general election information. A voter who waits until Tuesday, November 3 cannot request the same limited ballot at an Election Day site.
