Two downtown San Antonio landmarks have earned a seasonal honor. The Gunter Hotel and the Emily Morgan Hotel have been named among the National Trust for Historic Preservation's 25 most haunted hotels in the United States, in the annual list from the trust's Historic Hotels of America program. CultureMap San Antonio reported the pair were the only Texas properties to make the list.

The Emily Morgan returned to the list after a year away. The trust notes the 102-year-old building is considered one of North America's most active paranormal sites, a reputation tied to its original use as a medical building; its facade grotesques are carved with tooth pain and stomachaches, and the published accounts describe hospital-like smells reported on the fourteenth floor and doors and lights reported moving on their own on the twelfth.

The Gunter, built in 1909, is associated in the published accounts with Room 636, the site of one of the city's most famous murders in 1965, and with reports since the 1960s of cold spots, flickering lights and faint whispers. Historic Hotels also recently named the Gunter its Best City Center Historic Hotel. Both hotels have largely embraced the reputations, which the trust frames as a way to draw heritage travelers to preserved historic buildings.
