The safety lesson came to the neighborhood on Thursday. A Smoke Detector, Carbon Monoxide & Fire Safety Workshop featuring professionals from the San Antonio Fire Department was scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m. at 2802 W. Salinas in City Council District 5, according to the district's event listing.

The agenda was the practical core of home fire safety: why smoke and carbon monoxide detectors matter, how to install and maintain them properly, fire prevention, safe cooking and electrical practices, emergency preparedness, and how to build a home fire escape plan — with time to put questions directly to the fire-safety professionals in the room, the listing said.

Building Hope Together sweetened the morning with a free raffle built around the same lesson: first prize a carbon monoxide detector, second prize a smoke detector, and third prize a fire extinguisher — the three devices the workshop itself was teaching residents to keep working at home.

The West Side session lands in the season when the lesson matters most: heating equipment comes back on, holiday cooking approaches, and detectors that sat silent all summer get their first real test. Residents who missed the workshop can still run its checklist at home — test every detector, replace tired batteries, and make sure every sleeping room has a working alarm and every family member knows two ways out.
