A Bexar County fugitive wanted since 2019 has been apprehended in South Africa after seven years on the run, the U.S. Marshals Service announced in a release updated October 26. Robert Lee Redd Jr., 56, was wanted on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child stemming from a May 2019 indictment filed in the 144th District Court of Bexar County; according to the indictment, Redd allegedly assaulted a child under the age of 14, and he allegedly fled the United States after the indictment.

The Marshals' Lone Star Fugitive Task Force first received tips suggesting Redd may have been hiding in the Middle East, the release says. Through continued investigative work, deputies traced him instead to the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, and the task force passed its intelligence to INTERPOL and the South African Police Service, whose officers located and arrested Redd at his residence in Kabega Park.

"No matter how far a suspect flees or how many years pass, the pursuit of justice never ends," Brian D. Harrison, Acting U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Texas, said in the release. Redd was extradited from Cape Town to San Antonio; on arrival at San Antonio International Airport he was transferred to the San Antonio Airport Police and booked into the Bexar County Jail, where the Marshals say he will await further judicial proceedings on the outstanding charges. The charges are allegations in an indictment; the case has not been tried.
