Texas Storm Victims in 62 Counties, Bexar Included, Get Federal Tax Deadlines Pushed to February 1, 2027

The IRS has postponed certain federal tax filing and payment deadlines to Feb. 1, 2027, for individuals and businesses in 62 Texas counties hit by July's severe storms and flooding — and Bexar County is on the list.

Texans rebuilding from July's severe storms and flooding have more time on their federal taxes. The Internal Revenue Service announced on Oct. 27 (release TX-2026-05) that individuals and businesses in 62 Texas counties now have until Feb. 1, 2027, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments that would otherwise have fallen due during the disaster period.

The relief covers taxpayers who live or run a business in the listed counties, which include Bexar, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Hays, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, Travis, Uvalde and Wilson in the San Antonio and Hill Country region. The storms behind the relief began on July 14, 2026, and the postponement applies to certain deadlines falling on or after that date and before Feb. 1, 2027, according to the IRS. Governor Greg Abbott announced the approval on Oct. 28; he had issued a state disaster proclamation covering the 62 counties on July 14 and requested the federal tax relief on Oct. 15.

"Texans who took damage from the July storms and floods now have more time to file and pay federal taxes," Abbott said in the announcement, thanking the Treasury secretary and the IRS for the relief.

The details matter. The Feb. 1 deadline applies to individuals who had a valid extension to file their 2025 individual income tax return — but because the payments tied to those 2025 returns were due April 15, 2026, before the disaster period, those payments are not eligible for this relief, the IRS said. Penalties on payroll and excise tax deposits due on or after July 14, 2026, and before July 29, 2026, will be abated as long as the deposits were made by July 29, 2026. Taxpayers in the listed counties generally do not have to apply: the IRS identifies qualifying taxpayers from their address records.
